This blog and podcast are the diaries of a British Assistant Language Teacher in Japan. The thirst for adventure has resulted in primarily mishaps, chance encounters, embarrassing situations and misguided decisions. However, as the front cover of the first diary wisely states: ‘bad decisions make good stories.’
I chose ‘The Unfolding Fan’ because the metaphor, however cheesy, seemed to work. Something Japan-related seemed necessary, and something that was developing gradually, incrementally revealing itself, reflected the nature of the endeavour. I did not have the faintest idea what would happen to me during my time in Japan, or what image of myself I might be left with. But I hoped that, segment by segment, a sensational, delicate and colourful vision would have unfolded before me, while I remained at the centre of its spokes. Or something like that.
